In the first round of U-18 Madrid Region Championship, in Spain, Real Madrid killed Torrejon 147-35. But that is history. The team of the small city close the to spanish capital recovered from that result and in the quarterfinals of the competition kicked off Real Madrid after beating them 2-0 in the series. The teams that will participate in the Final Four at Madrid Region will be Torrejon, Estudiantes, Majadahonda and Olímpico 64. In the last four editions Real Madrid was in all of them, but not this year due to the great performance of Torrejon. David killed Goliath.
Two senegalese prospects are the main reason of the good year of Torrejon: 2.05 power-forward Bamba Toure ('92) and 2.00 small-forward Ouzin Laye ('92). Beside them 1.80 point-guard Sergi Herranz ('93) -signed from Real Madrid last summer- is playing in a good level also.
David Sanz, sports director of Torrejon, explains that "we wanted to arrive to the Final Four, and we are there. I think we can beat any team now. If we finish second, it will be an amazing result for us". The two first teams will keep fighting to play the Final Round of the U-18 spanish championship, that will be held in Lanzarote (Canary Islands).
Sanz adds that "we had problems to get the papers of both african players, they arrived late and we struggled. That's why we had to face against Real Madrid in the quarterfinals".
Torrejon won the U-18 Cholet Mondial Tournament of France last year (2009). In last edition, played some days ago, they finished 5th after losing against local squad.
