Latvian guard Oskars Reinfelds ('94) was selected MVP of the U18 Isla de Tenerife tournament, held in the spanish island this week. But the prospect of Canarias Basketball Academy (CBA) couldn't drive his team to the title after losing in the final against Joventut Badalona (56-44). They were the surprise of the event, after beating Real Madrid and Joventut in the qualifying round. Dutchmen Jito Kok ('94), Floris Veersteg ('94) and Shane Hammink ('94), czech Petr Herman ('94) or brit Nate Smith ('94) also made good performances. Let's check the best of each contest for CBA.
CBA 73 Tenerife Selection 61: Reinfelds ended as the best scorer with 17 points (5/12 twos, 1/4 threes and 4/5 free throws), adding 6 assists and 5 rebounds (but 7 turnovers). Kok collected a double-double (10 points, 11 boards and 2 steals), while Smith ('94) had 14 with 4/10 threes and 5 boards.
Endesa Tenerife 48 CBA 73: Veersteg ('94) led the win with 13 points (5/5 twos) and 5 boards, while Hammink added 12 points and 2 steals in only 15 minutes. Smith had 9 points (2/7 threes), with 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
Real Madrid 79 CBA 83: First surprise came with the crazy win over white team, and Hammink completing a great contest with 19 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Smith also shined with 14 (3/8 threes) and 2 steals, and Reinfelds added 13 with 3 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals.
Joventut 46 CBA 67: Stats not available for technical problems.
Joventut 56 CBA 44: Hammink wasn't enough in the final (14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists), and Reinfelds either (10 points, 7 boards and 1 steal). Czech Petr Herman ('94) finished with 10 points (2/6 threes) and 6 boards.
