2020, looks like a futurist movie, this date repeats itself up to the satiety when you speak about basketball in Germany. This date is marked with lights for all that we devote ourselves to the basketball in Germany. We might stand out two of the principal ideas that turn about this 2020. The first one, on federation side, to create a NT enough competitive to play the JJOO of Tokyo. About the second one, luck will have less to say. The Beko BBL (the German Bundesliga of basketball) wants to turn in 2020 into the best local championship of Europe. It is based, for a few years, on the most solid structure where the non-payments are unimaginable, gyms are an attractive place to be and the competition is a very attractive product for the consumer. The league has understood that it will be impossible to construct the best league of Europa without German players of good level.

Often you can speak about lost generations in German basketball through the fault of secondary role that has been given to the German player. Exists Clubs agreement that forces the teams of the Bundesliga to have 6 German players in every team. It is the first step. But undoubtedly the following one will be that these players win in role in their teams. With no doubt, this wok starts with the league coaches and those who design teams. Without faith in the young prospects the goal of 2020 will not be.

Two leagues work for the best young players. The NBBL (U19) and the JBBL (U16), with a very attractive calendar with a regular season (divided in two phases for U16 teams) and a play-off and play-down, with a final four to finish the season. The clubs with pro-team in the Beko BBL have the obligation to play these leagues with their young teams. Teams in last spot at the end of the season, have to pay an invitation (not cheap at all) for the following year. In addition these teams have to be coached by professionals. The games are disputed every Sunday, with a web coverage more than interesting (live results for twitter, complete statistics for all the games, etc …) and with trips of more than 2 hours that gives to the league a professionalized air.
It is enough to check up the rosters of U16 and U19 in the league website (www.nbbl-basketball.de) to verify the players size about which we are speaking. Possibly the "Nowitzki effect" has had the same consequences that Pau Gasol had in Spain, this is a double consequence. The first one,  a player like this leading your country. The second one, the obsession of turning every big player into a center who can run up and down, shooting threes and can play behind the arc. Sometimes such a versatile inside player leading the whole generation becomes  an obsession to everyone to find versatile inside players. The reality is that this type of player is very present in the league. Jan Niklas Wimberg (EWE Oldenburg, 1996), Richard Freudenberg (Bayern Munich, 1998) or Philipp Herkenhoff (Artland Dragons, 1999) they are some of the maximum exponents of players over 2 meters that are clearly outside players. We might include also Isaiah Hartenstein (Artland Dragons, 1998) or Niklas Kiel (Frankfurt Skyliners, 1997), but possibly the future of both players is more near basket. If we speak about bases possibly us the physically impressive player comes to the head, as Isaac Bonga (Koblenz, 1999) or Kostja Mushidi (Telekom Bonn), though in this point it is where the German basketball surprises more. Not only there are good frames in Germany, it’s necessary to speak about very talented players, in the PG position. Sebastian Schmitt (Bayern Munich, 1996) or Thorben Döding (Artland Dragons, 1999) can belong to the maximum exponents and, astride between the physicist and the talent Ismet Akpinar (DAWN Berlin, 1995).

The same economic possibilities makes the German player often rather weak or lacking in character. Possibly two realities are joined here. The first one the already commented economic situation, the second one the importance of the basketball like sport in Germany. Though it is true that in the last years the follow-up of this sport is top between the people, certainly it is not the first sport in Germany and, very possibly is squarely in the competition to be secondly some day. These two elements combined, make some young players interested in other sports (not being a sport of masses and bearing in mind that to more socioeconomic level normally the overprotection than the children belongs bigger) the majority of players can be corrected of lack of character or hardness, both physical and mental.

One of the fundamental aspects for the German player will be the ”minibasket” regulation changes. Till now the players U8, U10, U12 compete in games with normal regulation and baskets to 3.05. The games are an eternal meeting of more than two hours,  and that works in opposition to inculcate the children: to enjoy basketball.
Federations and the leagues are very powerful and active, sometimes even in so polemic questions between coaches and the rule of man to man defense against to zone defense, in the category JBBL. The intention of generating a more vivacious and less speculative game hits in this point with the reality of which 16-year-old players are not qualified to defend or attack zone defense, and they have to do every summer when they come to play U16 European Championships.
I think the German player has to go away gaining the respect both in the professional competitions and in the young championships. Will help, with no doubt, the arrival of foreign players to the German young teams. In spite of the difficulties to obtain a visa that young boys hare coming abroad the European Union, the growth of the league and the economic safety of the clubs makes more interesting to give the jump to Germany.

German basketball has  an enormous challenge in front: to push a basketball players next generation to be the starring of the German championship and to push the German basketball between the most powerful teams of the world. To do it they will must generate an own brand. All the others countries have to know what they are going to find when they play against the Germans, in the same way as the Balkan basketball, the Spanish, the Greek, the French, the Lithuanian or the Argentinian have his brand. If Germany get it………..2020 can be magic.
