PROFILE

ANGT Abu Dhabi- May 2025
By Artau Pascual

Nikola Karalic has slowly started to fill the frame. In the ANGT Abu Dhabi stage, he looked better through contact and did a better job as a ball-handler against a higher level of physicality. Karalic is still a lanky wing with long extremities, wide shoulders and margin to bulk up, but he’s made some noticeable progress since December -ANGT Istanbul-.

Offensively, Karalic projects as a slashing wing. He’s not explosive and still needs to improve his ability to change pace and height, but he’s fluid in a straight line and poised to change directions with the ball in his hands. The dribble looks more tightened than a few months ago and, despite his high center of gravity, he’s in control of his steps and angles on the drive. Karalic moves with long strides and possesses a solid footwork, both in reduced and wide spaces. His ability to decelerate stands out, and even though he’s predominantly right-handed, he has a fine finishing package because of his slow steps and left-hand dominance. He’s good at creating or absorbing contact when slowing down the steps. Mega hasn’t asked him to be much of a playmaker for his team, but Karalic projects as a good drive and dish, live dribble passer who can identify the open teammates and punish the help defender. He plays with his head up all the time, and his eye-hand coordination is good. We need to see more from him as a shooter: because of his undeveloped core strength and lower-body, his shooting looks inconsistent in spot-up, and he’s still not a solid spot-up shooter. All misses look different, and they are mostly related to energy transfer issues. However, the mechanics aren’t broken and don’t need a deep reshape.

On the defensive end, Karalic is far from having an impact. His ability to go through screens is poor, and he can’t stay in front of the ball in space because of his poor hip fluidity and high center of gravity. His improvements in this area will be related to his body development, as well as his off the ball reactivity will also be fueled by this same thing.

Karalic stands out with excellent size, a lanky build, and impressive athleticism for his age. He excels in transition, runs the floor well, and thrives on offensive rebounds, often converting second-chance points. His ball-handling suits straight-line drives, and added strength will enhance his ability to finish through contact. A promising shooter, he shows confidence in catch-and-shoot situations/spot-up threes. Defensively, his versatility allows him to guard multiple positions, and with further development, he could become a standout defender. At just 16, his physical tools and skills suggest a bright basketball future.

FIBA U16 European Championship- August 2024
By Artau Pascual

Lanky forward. His physical development goes long term, will need time to gain muscle. His main physical attributes are coordination, long strides and ability to change directions. Projects as a forward who should be able to create looks for himself if it all goes well.

Offensively, Karalic did a great job attacking closeouts. His first step is good enough to build advantages, he can drive in a straight line or changing directions and shows some craftiness as a finisher. Solid handles that will keep improving as he lowers his center of gravity. Can use both hands on the drive, but he relies a lot on his right hand as a finisher. Spot-up shooting has improved a lot: consistent mechanics and good results. Has fine shooting range and balance. Can play pick&roll as a ball-handler: rejects the screen and goes right. Reliable passer on his way to the rim: finds cutting bigs and delivers well the ball.

Despite he still needs to lower his stance, he shows some potential as an on-ball defender. He’s able to recover lost ground by turning his hips easily, and lateral quickness plus length allow him to bother ball-handlers. Fine shot-blocking instincts. Effort consistency will improve as his motor gets more consistent.

ANGT Belgrade- March 2024

Raw.  Promising body, long and lengthy. Will grow quite more. Wasn’t capable of doing anything tangible during the event because he lacked the motor and toughness to face two-year older competition, but left some glimpses of ball-handling and dribbling. Shooting needs a lot of work, and he has to add strength. Every miss looks different at this point. Left some nice driving sequences, and his touch in the paint suggests he has some finishing potential. One of the highest upsides in the whole tournament.

General overview- January 2023

Nikola Karalic is a tall, lanky perimeter player. Because of his long strides he is a good slasher: he gets to the rim at will and finishes with both hands. He is a good ball handler: his center of gravity is still tall, and he has knee valgus, but once he reaches the final stages of his growth he'll be able to put on display his dribbling repertoire. He is creative and brave. His shooting release is too slow, and his shooting base is a bit too wide, but he can create looks for himself. Thanks to his soft touch he can score with runners and floaters. Nearly unstoppable in transitions and fastbreaks. On the defensive end, he currently feels way more comfortable acting as a help-side defender thanks to his wingspan and instincts than chasing ball-handlers.
