General Overview - April 2026

Well-sized and athletic forward with the physical tools to potentially cover both forward spots at higher levels. Muurinen had a difficult season with Partizan Belgrade, struggling to earn consistent minutes and impact within a high-level competitive environment (12.6 MPG in ABA League, 2.5 MPG in EuroLeague). Physically, he did not make the expected leap over the past year, still lacking strength and struggling at times to absorb contact against stronger European competition. His most translatable offensive skill is his rim pressure. He is an effective transition finisher who can consistently play above the rim thanks to solid explosiveness and vertical pop. In the half-court, he is more comfortable attacking closeouts than operating as a creator. Perimeter shooting remains a major swing skill in his projection. While the mechanics appear fluid, the results are inconsistent and currently below average from three-point range. Off the ball, he shows decent cutting instincts and activity, although he currently lacks the processing speed and feel typically associated with high-level connector forwards.

Overall, Muurinen projects as a high-major forward with intriguing physical upside. His combination of size and athleticism remains attractive, but long-term projection will heavily depend on improvements in shooting consistency and overall physical development.

The "Rising Star" award winner was a key piece in a surprising Finland team that ended up in 4th place after a memorable run. Standing at 6'10", Muurinen is #1 in Eurohopes’ 2007-born ranking, and he projects as a top recruit in the 2026 class. The 18-year-old Finnish player displayed impressive flashes of talent during the event, and as these were his first games on a men’s big stage, he made the case to be a potential lottery pick in the 2027 NBA Draft. Muurinen had a good fit alongside Finland's star Lauri Markkanen in limited minutes, but he was able to impact the game thanks to his energy and fearless style of play. He immediately stands out on the floor because of his energy and fearless approach. At the moment, he lacks elite craft and ball-handling skills that would allow him to project as a primary option in an NBA scenario. He would fit well in a context where he can use his athleticism and size to finish at the rim, taking advantage of opportunities created by teammates. Over the course of his youth career, Muurinen has also shown intriguing mid-range skill, which he was unable to display during this event due to his limited role. Fluid and creative near the rim, most of his production came through dunks and offensive rebounds (87.5% from 2FG). His shooting consistency was remarkable throughout the event, hitting 35.3% from behind the three-point line, although his mechanics remain not completely fluid. A solid defender overall, he competes and contests many shots thanks to his reach and wingspan. At the moment, Muurinen is pursued by several high-major programs.

Offensive-wise, the most talented player in the event. Looks stronger than last Summer after a whole season at Sunrise Christian, and he also looked more engaged on defense, both in terms of tension and defensive positioning. Left some nice weakside rim-protection reads and mostly was always on time. Didn’t want to take a major role on the offensive end for most of the event, but he was able to self-create buckets from the three-point line and did some interesting drives, both in transition or halfcourt offense. Didn’t feel anxiety about not being the first option -team was guard-oriented-. 

FIBA U16 European Championship- August 2023

Forward with a decent body frame and length standing at 6’10. Good vertical. Lacks explosiveness. Well-coordinated - runs the floor well. Light on feet. Excellent shooter – he can come off staggers and take a shot as well as spot-up threes with decent range. Solid handles for his size (high dribble). He plays only on the perimeter. Not afraid of contact but lacks the strength to finish through it. Very active on boards. Defensively he doesn’t band knees and laterally he is not good. Questionable endurance.

General overview- April 2023

Lanky player with promising frame and mobility, although he's still undeveloped. His hips are high: struggles to shift directions. Needs to improve his motor and gain functional strength. His offensive ceiling is fascinating: provides uncommon outside shooting versatility for a 6'9, is already getting repetitions as a pick and roll ball handler and gets to the rim driving, but he's unable to finish because he doesn't know how to handle contacts. On the defensive end he doesn't have positive contribution right now: can't manage matchups with stronger bigs, can't switch and can't get back is a step slow closing out. Once he stops growing he'll improve steadily.
